To really clean up a face. What can I do to make some of the retouches or clones a little smoother? What else can I do to make this image better?

What can I do to improve this image? Keep it simple. Before you even start, I'm gonna shoot down anything that requires layers or masques..I am not comfortable with them yet.

that's like saying
"i'll only drive my car in first gear..."
or,
"i'm going to use this drill, but i'll do so by spinning it round and round with my hands until the hole is deep enough..."
point? you've got to learn your tools. layers and layer masks are a cinch to learn. there are some tutes in this forum and also in the hall of wisdom, go forth and learn. there are also numerous books available that will guide you through the process.
good luck.

What would your suggestions be for the photo? Or did I manage to somehow do a decent job? I rarely ever do this..but I promised this girl, "No one EVER looks bad on my camera!" The funny thing is, in person, she's cute as a button..but man...the way this image came out scared me...hence my desire to edit it. So dish! Is it good enough? If not, what needs to be done? I might just tone down the saturation a little bit.

That's because you always see her in a bar

Seriously,
She is a pretty girl... direct flash can make anyone look bad. I'd say you've done a very good job, especially considering you claim to be a Photoshop rookie.
You're off to a good start in your PS life. Just be sure to keep after it and don't be afraid of the tools!
Not sure if this is what you were looking for, but that was all I could do in 5 minutes..
This, unfortunatley, involved layers, masking, filters and other heavy PS stuff.. But cropping is availalbe even in the most simplistic editors, so you can do at least that much..

I could've added teeth, too, but I decided not to.:):
After all, she was pretty sad on the original..
