The Road From Zion
Vacation day in Denver.
The wife awoke at 3:00am in Florida. She was snowed out of Denver for 2 days forcing us to
cancel one day of the trip to Utah. Her airplane landed at 9:00am and were on the road in no time, the wife
packed in the back seat asleep.
We took to the road in east Denver in overcast skies. No time to stop along the way for photos, not much
to see in the dark and snow/ice along the route. We had about 600 miles to go, I-70 west to I-15 south then
turn to Zion. We Arrived At the hotel at 11:00pm after about 5 large cups of coffee . No photos were taken
on the drive down to Zion, only on "The Road From Zion".
1
The park is very small even with a few photo stops it took no time to arrive at the lodge. At the lodge
Nathans Dinner Dogs were being served. !!We Had Nathans Dinner Dogs with us. :thumbSweet Time
to tryout Nathans Manifold Dogs.
2
A little tin foil and good placement.
3
Dogs placed at 1:20pm
and off we went to the end of the canyon to hike.
4
Found a few flowers along the way down.
5
This photo done with my wife's point and shoot.

Back to the car for lunch. Sorry no photos of the feast. The dogs were hot.

Just before the park exit.
14
The next day we decided to hike to the fall just across from the Zion lodge.
I did not have much luck at the fall, some strange people keep getting to my photos.
15
16
17
The upper falls were well worth the steep hike up.
18
Next night Page Arizona---- Antelope Canyon.
We arrived during a wind storm and the weather was not going to change. Not wanting to take a sand
shower in the Canyon we made reservations for a regular tour for the next day at 1130am. Just a note
here, If you want to join the photographer tours you need to book weeks in advance for a spot on
the tour.
19
I put my lens in a plastic bag, tape on the lens shade and had a filter on it. The camera was in a cover also to protect it from dust, Battery's and extra memory in my pocket. Do not bring your black canvas camera bag! Man did I see a lot of dusty trashed camera bags. The tour placed us in a the back of a covered but open truck and drove on a dusty road for 15min. Everything was covered in dust even before we entered the canyon.

This one was my favorite.

I needed a wider lens but no one could or should change a lens in this place. I was using my 5d markII
with 24-105mm, still not that wide at times.

During the wait for the truck to Antelope Canyon, a few of the more advanced photographers around me were looking at my plastic warped brand new 5d Mark II mounted on the end of my very old but heavy Bogan. It kinda looked like trash on a stick lol. I received a lot of advice on how to shoot. One person from the trip we meet later in a subway shop. He ask about our next location and hinted that we were about to see some great views.
Next on to Escalante and Bryce Canyon.
Red Canyon was the surprise he was hinting about. Man, what eye candy. The clouds broke at the
right time for full sun on the saturated rocks in front of dark storm clouds

29
This next photo of Red Canyon is two stitched in to a massive 20mb Jpg.

31
We stayed two nights in Escalante and were held back by snow wind and rain for about half of the time.
A few more from Bryce Canyon.

Along the road from Escalante to Goblin stat park we found a small but very nice coffee shop right
off the road, just after a very nice turn out that overlooks a fantastic view. I spent an hour walking
around not knowing about the coffee shop. This place has two rooms just below the shop, about $170.00 a night and the best view you could ever find. The Kiva Koffeehouse and Kiva Kottage.
This is a must stop place!!!!

We passed an odd attraction, gift shop that was built into the rock clif , Moqui Cave. Years ago it
was was a wild bar and dance house. Inside he has a collection of Indian artifacts that his father collected during his life. He also turned the old large dance hall in to a display of florescent rocks.
This room was massive and the largest display of florescent rocks I have ever seen.

I overlooked the outside of this place. Maybe some one can do justice to this tree and rock formation.
49
Then on to Hanksville and Goblin State Park. We stayed in Hanksville Inn and ate at the
Red Rock Steak House, across the street. The same management, it's a small town.
One thing I was going for here was eye bleeding sharpness. I used the tank tripod with MLU and
remote release. I held the Iso below 200 and f stop below f/8.Careful don't scratch your eyes, maybe
you should put on eye protection before you look, lol. It snowed and rained for a few days before and It
help to remove any trace of foot prints and gave me a nice crust on the ground.

am i the only one that sees faces in the stalactite pair on the right middle frame????
And what about the dancing goblins above them?
Ps: look close at the faces its Joseph and Mary. His dad was a character. The dancing goblins are real in the rock formations, cool.

But pretty sure you don't have a bear trackr there, looks more canine than anything.. I'm not great with canine tracks, but I've tracked my share of bears

Thanks for sharing and the tips on early registration for photography tour and gear preservation in Antelope Canyon. Very good pointers for when hubby and I go in early Spring. I just returned from a week long shoot in Zion. The great thing is few people and no shuttle. The bad was ice on trails. Beautiful area, and you caught some lovely light.
Thanks for looking
One more hint for Antelope Canyon. The lower Antelope Canyon is open early and you can get a all day pass, it is self guided. You have to go back to town in time for your tour of the upper part then you can go back to the lower for a few more photos after they drive you back in town.
