Hidden galleries

I'm asking for advice here, because what I want to do is certainly within Smugmug's current capabilities, but I'm not sure of the best way to do it.

I have a ton of photos on my site (in the tens of thousands, going back about ten years now). The problem is that they are like a huge pile, which users have to sort through to find the few that pertain to them.

What I'd like to do is create a new set of galleries that include copies from my existing photos that would apply to a specific theme or person(s).

However, I do not want to "unveil" these galleries until I finish sorting through my existing photos (which may take months, at the rate I work) and adding the pictures that would apply to these new galleries.

I know you can "hide" galleries, but the only way I can see to transfer existing photos into them would be to copy them into the existing gallery, then move them, one by one, into the new "hidden" galleries.

That would be tedious and frustrating.

Is there a better method anyone can suggest to accomplish what I want to do?

I appreciate any and all ideas here.

If I were you, I'd create a bunch of new galleries and mark then as unlisted. That will make them so that they only show from the homepage or your galleries page when you are logged in (they will be hidden - like an unlisted phone number).

Then, because Smugmug does not make it easy to copy photos to a new gallery other than one by one, I'd work offline and organize your images on your own computer with copies in a sub-directory for each gallery you want to build. Then just do a big upload overnight into the new galleries when you've got a reasonable set of images organized.

    Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I guess sometimes the hard way is the only way. Ah, well...
