Egret-fest, Canada edition
There is a nesting colony of herons in Stanley Park (the SE corner above the tennis courts) in Vancouver, BC. It would be hard to find a colony in a more urban location. You can find them hunting in Lost Lagoon 1/4 mile away, often just a few feet from the trail. Not nearly as skittish as most herons (no need to be "stealthy" with these guys! )
They're building nests now, by the time the kids come around the trees will be covered in vegetation, but it's still fun to watch them.
I took these about two weeks ago.
#1 (Someone forgot to take out the trash...)
#2 (the crow won this battle actually, the heron was forced to fly off)
#3 Coming in for a landing:
#4 Where'd I put that branch?
#5 Heron in the rain:
#6 Yawny:
#7:
#8 Hairs on the back of the neck:
#9:

Would love to see some of the kids when they arrive.

There are a few that stand out in the series. I like #8 as well.
