These birds live across the highway from me. They live in a very nice development in their own rookery, hidden from view by trees, there is a path around their lake, with an observation tower. It is different shooting, but I did not want to go far today, and I did want to shoot egrets.

I call these my New Age Birds, high density living, but very nice. And kids, they have kids, of all ages all over the place. One family, the parents must have been very lax on discipline, I have never seen such "naughty" children. The kind you just want to order a hit on. "I am going to Whoop You, Child!"
Instead, the kids never stop screaming at the parent, the whole time I was there, well, even in this photo with all the neighbors near, the children are screaming, probably for Ice Cream.

Like many new developments, depending on the location, there is not a lot of diversity in this one. All I saw were Egrets and Anhingas. (Got the black and the white covered, there, but no grey/blue Herons, nor night ones, either)

If my kids had even thought about treating me like this, there would have been H to pay, by the kids.

And they never stopped

A little later on, but after this series, I increased the depth of field, by setting the camera aperture on f 11, I upped the ISO, too..... trying to work on my fliers. This is a good place to do that.

I am having serious problems working "green" photos up. Never have liked green. Now I discovered that the photo we all like so much is badly out of gamut. Everything I was doing seemed to affect the gamut. I have some learnin to do.

That made me hesitant, I did not always get the pop or deep colors I like.
I finally upped the shadow in RAW, got them darker in RAW, brought them up.
I have to check this out, and anyone who knows, has info, whatever, please comment.

This next one, it should be a Mother's Day card. I am sending it to my daughters. Those of you with multiple kids might recognize this!

I call the last one, for tonight, I call it "White Lace"........love it, I do.

    Ginger -

What a great series. The shot you described as a Mother's Day card, looks like it should be sent to a greeting card company. And...the shot you call white lace, reminds me of something else. I can almost imagine that bird smiling as she flies away from her young. She is probably thinking, "Thank goodness, I can fly and they can't!" After watching egret famiies I am amazed that more chicks don't "accidentally fall out of the nest".

Thank you, Gayle. I was surprised, when I saw the photos large, not thru the little "looking glass", at how badly the parent was being abused. I had known that those kids just did NOT shut up. She did leave for awhile, the mom did.

I didn't think about it when I took the photos, but when I posted the flier, the White Lace shot, that I realized that I had actually been above the birds in some of their flights. That made my shots look different. Some I was still shooting up.

It is very wooded, I can only see the birds thru the trees, that is the only real hindrance to getting the flight shots.

ginger (thanks for stopping and commenting. good thing I went then, it is raining now.)

Thank you Ben, Case, for stopping and commenting.

Ben, thank you for remembering my frustration. I guess, to be humorous about it, I am less unhappy with my work than with the "Dangerfield" syndrome.

The respect issue. Actually, in this area, birding, I am treated quite well, I think. You and Jeff are always around for me. Steve, Harry, Gayle is aboard, etc.

I was just whining there. Though I did post a couple of photos on FM of birds that had not gotten attention here. I posted one, in particular, in the nature thread and in the landscape thread, there. I got a lot of responses, I was very pleased with that. I am not known there, and I have never had many responses. The frustrating part was, my responses were coming, for the most part in the landscape thread, where everyone who responded thought the photo truly belonged.

So, I loved my photo (s), but they crossed from birds to a hybred, in my opinion, were not getting good, if any, bird responses. And I was quite frustrated.

Then along comes the challenge......................rolleyes1.gif . I used to make the finals regularly, then I started doing the birding, changed emphasis, new, very good people, came in, and I couldn't make the finals to save my soul, not that my soul wants saving. I got a photo I loved/adored and didn't make it. I tried not to try anymore, but in the end I would try with lesser photos, at the last minute and to the point of exhaustion.

So, Monday was a very bad day for me. I was in pain, then, and tues was worse, it is slowly letting up. You know when a boat trailer, with boat, being pulled rapidly by a large truck runs into you, and if it knocks you down, hard, in the street, the pain is often felt more later when the adrenalin goes away. So I was on a downward spiral and whining.

I must say that everyone made me feel better. I was thinking today that if I were to be that down again, the responses might be more along the line of "you have got to be kidding!" and that would be all.

I don't know how the rest of you feel, but I think we are all artists here, and some of us are more "nuts" than others.

I needed help in changing my perspective that day. I appreciate everyone who helped me.

Now on this challengerolleyes1.gif ................ Gosh I wish I weren't even aware it is going on. They are finishing up a huge bridge here. I keep thinking that there should be a photo in that. Especially on weekdays. It is not a little thing, it is a great project, like building the golden gate bridge. I cannot let go that I should be finding a way to show the danger. There have been deaths, not as many as the first bridge they built in the 1920s, but it is dangerous work.

I can't figure out how I can legally get close enough to take photos.
And, I, I went to sleep this afternoon. I will stew over that all weekend.. If I come up with something I like, then I will be "damned", here on earth, with the amt of emotional investment I put into my work.

And those things have never won a challenge, fine with me, that was not my goal, though winning was a thrill. I am a terrible judge of my work in that way, and others are very good, too, etc. But I did make the finals, and sometimes, totally out of the blue, I won (twice).

But when my work is totally ignored, I am, as I put it in the depths of hell, even as I post a bird shot that I love.

The only thing I can do to feel better is to go out and shoot, especially the birds. But this past week, my body has needed to recover from the blow of the boat trailer and the impact of the cement on my head, neck, wrist and the rest of my body. As I say, my camera did come through unscathed.:D

    g,

more than anyone ever wanted to know. Heck, I like my work when it isn't even very good. Especially then.

    These are beautiful Ginger
I love all of these. The first one is great, and I love the "Mothers Day Card".

I'm sorry I missed the post about your accident with the boat trailer. I went back and found it. That's really terrible. Thank God you're OK. Hitting your head on the pavement is no small matter. People have been killed that way.

I'm so glad you are enjoying your bird shooting. I kind of broke the challenge habit after being on vacation for a couple of weeks. But, I just don't have any ideas about anything dangerous. I used to spend a lot of time setting things up, but I just don't have the time right now. I have a lot to catch up on after being away.
