Google webmaster verification

I'm trying to do what I can to increase my google ranking for a key phrase. It's been suggested in this forum that one registers their site with Google Webmaster tools. Google asks the user to "verify" their site by one of two methods, neither of which it seems I can do. I've chosen one of the two methods - adding a meta tag - to seek help with.

Here are the specific instructions from Google:

Copy the meta tag listed below and paste it in your site's home page in the first section of the page, before the first section.

****** name="verify-v1" content="6O3CL30ubMTvd9hqip704g0j1DuQx4CY+rkqon46YFk=" />

For some reason, the beginning of this line isn't displaying properly. It is the less than sign, followed by the word meta, space, then the rest of the line starting with "name" above.

If I can do this myself, can someone please tell me how? If not, can someone at dGrin or SmugMug do it for me?
