Here are a few from my last family session in full sun (and not my choice) other than when I was under the playground with the little guy =) It was supposed to be warm but ended up being chilly (thanks to crazy Chicago weather) LOL!! This family is so great :)

You couldn't help the lighting conditions - you worked with what had - kuddos.

Beautiful job with composition! I especially like the composition of #4, 6, and 8. I like the DOF. Your subject has beautiful eyes.

Overall, I'm not a huge fan of the color portraits because of the lighting. The colors are so flat.

The B&W looks very nice, particularly #4 and #8. The conversion would look really nice on #10 is you could add more contrast between the subject's face and the grass.

I'm really trying to like #6 - it's just the father's hand I'm struggling with. Too much crop? I'm not sure.

In summary - big BIG fan of #4 and #8. iloveyou.gif

You did great with the full sun. I actually like the color, even though it is a bit flat, because it's so clear and natural. You avoided harsh shadows, and the contrast is good. There is a lot of personality in this set.

I am the lover of warm tones, so take this with a grain of salt. I'd shoot on the shade color balance when the light is behind them. If you think about it, they are in their own shadow. I'd try to get their faces right/ warmer, and let everything else fall where it will.

Compositionally, these are very nice photos .... something to be proud of.

People have been commenting about how they are "flat" and they are write - mostly because the processing hasn't yet been finished. What's missing is a good contrast curve and a good solid black point. Get those two under control and you'll get what you want out of these - it's all there, just a little more processing.

Yes, you can fix in post. I used Dan Margulis' portrait technique.
    If not now, when?

+1. The photos are gorgeous, I love your style ... they just need a bit more contrast, that's it :D(I like rutt's take on it ...)

I like the as is as well. You did a great job, I am curious about the b/w, did you use flash at all, his catchlights are so vibrant.

Thank you! I did not use a flash (his eyes are really beautiful). The b&w conversions were done using a combination of TRA :)
