A Beautiful Day at the Zoo

I took my kids to our local zoo the day before yesterday. I've been increasingly discouraged by the quality of my telephoto. Everything had been soft up 'til now. I decided to shoot the whole day on auto (gasp!) and just see what I could get out of it. Not much artistry in these, they are just snapshots. I wish I had more room on the right side of the frame with the flamingos. I was wrestling my two kiddos and in some cases had to hold a baby on my lap, twist around 180 degrees, and snap a shot while on a boat.
I am finally thinking I might be happy with the lens under the right conditions; the pelican was shot all the way out at 300mm.

#1 and #2 are SOOC, #3 I had to move the EV compensation up a stop and clone out an unsightly wire.
TFL!

Please ignore my opinions! And if I ask for constructive criticism, please give it to me. I have really thick skin! :huh

Thank you so much for taking the time to look. The flamingos were pretty still, so I attribute the sloppy framing to my general inattention. The lens pretty much does a good job in bright light with no overcast sky, and you have to be outside, temperature 70 degrees, while you're sticking your tongue out of the left side of your mouth hopping on one foot.
I do think my camera does well on auto, I need to learn that it's not always "copping out" to set it on auto in certain situations. Had I dialed in all the settings here, something would have been blown out, or blurry, or whatever.
IQ of the lens looks fine to me.
I didn't even notice that, is it broken, or is he supposed to look like that?
