I took this picture at the finish line of the race yesterday, but the scene was about 50 meters out. It is my favorite of the day because of the total random catch of the eventual winning rider, a female jockey, who took the moment to glance back to see her nearest rival... Perspective provides an illusion. The gray is about four lengths back while the bay on the left is perhaps two lengths back. In an earlier race this jockey was "involuntarily dismounted," so this is a testament to female fortitude I suppose. Enjoy:

Thanks! Sharp also considering that what you see is only about 1/3 the area of the original image.

    What is a "neil line?"

Shooting horse racing is, of course, very different from shooting horse shows, where at a horse show every rider basically passes the same jump or does the same sequence, and you are just capturing the action, but really it is a mix of sports and portrait photography. A horse race is pure sports, as there is the race and you never know what you might have. The other five races on this day were won by many lengths, and even the race for place and show were not really interesting. It's lucky to have a race like this where there was actually some action left at the end, and lucky that I was there!
