I did purchase various lappies for kids and relatives, but never felt the need to get one for myself. Finally, all the tethered-shooting needs and on-site activities broke me in, so I finally bit the bullet and ordered myself an laptop - my very first one ever:-).

Here are brief specs:

Dell M6400
quad core 2.53Ghz
4GB RAM
nvidia 1GB video
17" UWXGA (with built-in 2.0mp webcam and mike)
2x64GB solid state(!) drives (and I can use my desktop as file server)
Vista Ultimate 64bit
DVD, card readers, etc.

As a temporary version (no funds for transmitting grip yet) also ordered 15ft USB2.0 cable.

Hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll know firsthand what advantages all this portabilty really brings. But I already envision the lack of need to get off the TV chair just to reply for a quick email :wink :rofl

As we all know, Apple machines can't run Star*Explorer, so what good it would be to me? mwink.gif

I was just playing Nik, but on a serious note, I never heard of Star Explorer till just now. Did you create it? It looks very cool thumb.gif What would it cost me to have my smugmug site customized?

    I was just playing, too:-)
Being a windows junkie, as I am, it's always fun to tease my apple-toting friends...iloveyou.gif
Although I was, too, serious about S*E being a Windows-only app. Creating something like that for mac would mean investing several $K in the hardware and at least a year of making it right (unlike end-user stuff, development tools (Xcode) on apple are totally pre-historic comparing to thier windows counterparts :cry ). So even if I get a hundred or two of totally extatic users after I'm done I still will be deeply in red, which will take me years to recover...ne_nau.gif

As to the smugmug customization... I don't do it myself (I'm more like a back-end guy by trade: architecture, databases, processes and threads, optimization, refactoring, etc.), but I can wholeheartedly recommend http://www.wolfsnap.com/smugization

Returned this one, got another version:
    same CPU: quad 2.53
same videocard (1Gb) - and nVivia has un updated driver for Windows 7RC already!
better screen: RGB LED Edge-2-Edge 17"
more RAM: 8Gb instead of 4Gb
more hards drives: 160+320. Yes, no SSD this time, but I figured I'll manage, I'm not planning on extensive battery usage anyway:-)
    Should arrive tomorrow! :ivar
    PS
And the best news: I will be in black by Monday!
