Hi, this is a pic of a local guy I did for a project on tattoos.
I'd be interested to hear opinions and really to see whether this works or not.

I like the shot I think it worls well. I like the lighting effect of the ring light on portraits but I always get distracted by the round catch lights in the eyes.
You did a fine job

Your subject has great character ........his face tells a story, I look at it and wonder if this man has had an adventurous life .
I like the way you've done this shot.........looks good, I'm sure they'd be very happy with the photo....... Skippy (Australia)

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life...Picasso
Very dramatic shot.
I however do not like the ring light in his eyes, to me just seems unatural, and I would have like more DOF.

I like everything about this shot, including the high contrast, but those 2 light rings in the eyes are bothersome to me too
Welcome to Dgrin and hope to see more of your pics in the future

Considering the project was on tattoo, I'd increase the DOF.. Although I like the sharpness on the face..:-)
Nice shot and welcome aboard!
That pic is just awesome! It defenitely "works"!

All your comments are very much appreciated.
It is very difficult to get honest critique from people you know or work with or clients - so all comments are taken on board.
I agree with the ring-flash comments, it can be distracting to some, but equally I think in some instances it helps to draw the viewer in.
With regards the DOF, yes, point taken there too. The project became more about the people than the tattoos, which whilst being an integral part of the person are somewhat like clothes, in that they could be covered up etc, whereas the eyes and face are always there and always the same.
This is a friend done with daylight - but same place, same camera and same lens. Oh, and he doesn't have any tattoos - though in reality he could be covered with them!!!
I've been thinking of making up a home made ringflash myself (maybe a project for this winter), so I have to say I think the donut catchlights do add something to the portrait.
Your tattoo man portrait is excellent. I like to use shallow depth of field with my portaits as well, so I like the effect you've created.
Cheers!
