Hi, if you are standard or pro, yes indeed, TOOLS>customize gallery>Protected = yes :D

This is a great option. If you turn on the protection, it not only blocks the right click, but it also removes the "Download" button when you scroll over the image. If you are worried about people downloading your images, I would also make a watermark and turn that on as well.

The better way to remove the download option is to set the largest size available on the internet to something other than "original". If you don't set that option in the customize gallery page, then there are other ways for people to download your originals, even if you turn on right-click-protection. If you set the largest size available to something like XL, then there is no way anyone can get access to anything larger than that.

People should know that right-click protection is a mild deterrent at best. It can be bypassed in seconds by someone who knows what they are doing, though it can be effective for people who don't know how to bypass it. Limiting the maximum size available on the internet and tastefully done watermarks are one's best protection against image theft.

    Hi Andy,

I have a standard account and actually I can not find anywhere the Protected function as you instructed. I guess you meaned this option is for Power and Pro. Can anyone confirm this for me?

    Thanks,
    Hanneke

The world wide web has tons of information on how to do this, thus, watermark, watermark, watermark.

    Thanks for bringing this up!

And be sure to read the first gotcha! It is an important one! People can easily bypass right-click protection with this. It's why I watermark everything and do not allow sizes above medium.

Ok, I do have an excuse, I'm brand spanking new to SmugMug and AM LOVING IT !! (Just to let you know, I'm using the trail version at the moment but am going PRO in 13 days... have looked for a site like this for so long and hey presto, you were here all the time. ) Thanks in advance for your help.

Not sure if it's appropriate, but try and right click any of my images. :)

Can you Right-Click protect the entire page?
I know that you can enable the right-click protect on images ( personally, I just removed all my static images ) but I'm wondering if you can protect the whole page, the texts boxes, etc..

I'm constantly finding people who copy-n-paste other photographer pages, whole paragraphs of services, bios, packages, taglines, etc. I live in a community where everyother housewife is a GWC with a wix website selling $50 CDs. And frankly, I'm irritated.

If they're going to copy my page, I want them to have to at least type it all out themselves.

Can I protect my entire page?

BTW, my smugmug page was designed by New Skin Media, so its all html and css, so I don't really know how to add or change anything really complicated.

    Thanks for any help!

Just so you know, it takes seconds to do a View/Source in the browser and copy any text from there. You cannot protect from this. If it's on the web, it can be copied. I would not suggest putting any effort into preventing text copying because anything you do can be bypassed in seconds.

If you really wanted to be annoying to all potential text copiers, you would put all your text into images, but that starts to compromise the layout, maintainability and usability of your site.

A couple of different way to combat this.

One, sign up for tynt.com, which will let you know when your site is being copied somewhere else.

Two, find out who is hosting these GWC's sites and contact the host with a DCMA copyright takedown request. Not only will the host comply once you provide your credentials and the information from tynt, but they will probably turn off their site completely. deal.gif Take them out one at a time and buy their domain names and point them to your site.

    change text?
Where can I change the wording/text that appears when someone right-clicks on an image? I did it once when I set up my account... but now I can't find where to change the wording now...

    Thanks!

It's a customization I think as I've done it too. Let me see what I can find...

I don't remember where I found it, but you put this in your top javascript:
    rightClickWarning = "MESSAGE YOU WANT"
