This is a 1941 Chrysler Newport Dual Phaeton. There were only five made ( this one belonging to Walter P. Chrysler ) and it served as the pace car for that year's Indianapolis 500 race. It had 143 HP from a 323 C.I. straight - 8 engine with a 3-speed automatic transmission. This car was sold at an auction held during the show for $687,000.

This car was a special show car developed by Chrysler and was known as the Thunderbolt....notice the silver lightning bolts on the doors. I don't think I would have liked having to change tires on this baby.

Awesome as usual Tom. That 2nd car seems way ahead of it's time with the retracting headlamps. For some reason it brings to my mind the movie "War of the Worlds" headscratch.gif. Thanks again for bringing us wonderfully unique automobiles that harken back to a simpler time. It's a shame that with this heritage Chrysler is in the state that it is today. :cry

    Hi Jack,

You're so right. Chrysler was the breeding ground for many, many innovative automotive engineering developments through the years. For someone like us, who have lived through the glory days of the American auto industry, it's really tough to witness the current state of affairs without a foreboding sense of sadness permeating the air.

    Take care,

    Tom
