Is http://gallery.domainname.com possible?

I see several web sites that now use the addedname.domain.com instead of www.domain.com to direct you to a specific place on their web site. Is it possible to set something like this up with my custom domain name via GoDaddy? I could see this as very handy in directing people to a specific gallery. They would type gallery.domain.com. I suppose some hidden redirect link would be needed to make this go to a specific SmugMug gallery. I don't even know what this is called, so I can't search for it.

Thanks!

    It's called forwarding.

Here are some working examples of what you are wanting to do:

doheny2009.primarycolors.com displays the gallery at http://gallery.primarycolors.com/gallery/8049276_eP6T6

pma09.primarycolors.com displays the gallery at http://gallery.primarycolors.com/gallery/7518098_qqmrM

southwest.primarycolors.com displays the gallery at http://gallery.primarycolors.com/gallery/6238051_hTuQT

I don't think you need to use forwarding to make this work. It's called "sub-domains" and it should be possible if your domain host supports it (and many do). Do a search for "sub-domain" on your domain host's web-site.

    Do _not_ use forwarding.
Use Godaddy's CNAME, it'll do just fine for what you want. Write us, ATTN: Doc at the help desk, if you want us to do it for you on Godaddy.

I just re-read your question, and I'm wondering if the answers you are getting are answers to the question you asked.

Are you asking if you can use something like http://photos.mydomain.com instead of http://www.mydomain.com? If yes, then follow jfriend's and Andy's notes.

Or are you asking if you can direct to different galleries based on the first part of the url? If that's what you're asking, I don't believe that is possible (short of using the not-recommended method of forwarding, in which case the prefix doesn't stick).

Yes! I would like to be able to do what BeachBill has done above. For example, I would like baseball.domain.com to go to my Baseball Category and display just the galleries in that Category, instead of going to my Home Page. I don't think Andy would want me to have the help desk do each one. Perhaps he didn't understand my question. Do I need to do that at GoDaddy? If so, I need to learn so I can modify as necessary.

What is wrong with forwarding as described above?

    Thanks BeachBill!

I just found this video which mentioned SubDomains at GoDaddy, of which I have 90. I think this will work!
