I have a dilemma. I am getting ready to make my annual purchase and I have decided that I need to standardize my tripods. I currently own two tripods; one is a Tracker 2 by Vanguard USA, that I purchased as a Cabela’s brand and one is a OS-364 by One Source Network, also purchased at Cabela’s. I am very happy with the construction on both. The OS-364 is a carbon fiber with a ballhead (my first) and the Tracker 2 has a panhead. I am getting ready to purchase an EF-600 f4.0 IS lens and will be buying a Wimberly Gimbal head for it.
I would like to dedicate the Tracker 2 to the Gimbal mount. I think the tripod will support it, as the specifications say it is good to 20lbs, and my 40D with battery grip and 580EX come at 15.4lbs with the 600 lens.
I would then like to put a Really Right Stuff quick release clamp on the OS-364 ballhead. This unit would not be used with the 600, and the biggest lens would be the 100-400L. The maximum load per the specifications on the OS-364 is 12lbs.
What do you think? If these platforms are stable enough, I would like to purchase another OS-364 and a second Right Stuff clamp, or would I be better off buying another Tracker 2 and a really right stuff ball head, or another solution altogether?
I am trying to be able to have two tripods for general use on close ups and landscapes, and for our Yellowstone wildlife viewing the ability to use three, two for the cameras and one for the spotting scope.
I realize that I can look at the dedicated name brands, but based on my current use of the two “Cabela’s” branded tripods, I think they work fine. Cost is only somewhat of a concern as my annual capital budget is about $11k USD, but if I do not have to break the bank, then I would prefer not to. The OS-364 at Cabelas is $250 with the ballhead and the Tracker 2 is $180.
The main reason I am doing this is to switch to the Arca Swiss style feet so that I can quit changing out feet to match tripods.
Thanks and sorry for the long read.
