Picking the best monitor

Advice needed, please:
My old monitor (17" CRT) is ill, so I'm thinking hard about replacing it. Obviously I won't be replacing it with another CRT, since you can't hardly buy them anymore. And anyway, I want a widescreen one. I am so tired of having Photoshop eat up a third of my screen space with toolbars... I want the wide screen so that I can push the toolbars to the edges and still have plenty of working space for my image(s).
So. New monitor wanted. Specifications:
* Widescreen and flat panel
* At least 19 or 20 inches, but no more than 22 or 23. My workspace is a bit limited.
* NOT too high a native resolution -- 1600x1000 is as high as I want to go
* Good for editing photos (obviously)
* Under $500. Under $300 if I can get it.
I know the maximum price is a killer, but it's all I can afford right now. "Nice to have" features include tilt-swivel stand, built-in USB ports, built-in speakers. But quality is most important.
I've seen the AnandTech "LCD Thread" and it didn't seem to have any useful information in it. Its author seemed to assume his readers all had money to burn, and I don't.
Any recommendations?

See my other recent posts in this forum for info on monitors - there have been a few.
The next best choice would be the HP LP2275w.
Here's a comparison site:

The Dell is pretty much a standard gamut monitor while the HP is a wide gamut monitor. You'll need to use a colour managed workspace inclusive of browsers, editors, and print programs in order to avoid the complaints of many who have had issues with oversaturated colours.
