Looking at getting either the Canon EF 20-35 2.8 L or Tamron 17-50 2.8 XR Di II.

Anyone ever owned both?

Thanks for your comments.

My brother has the Tamron and thinks it is the best thing since sliced bread. Would give you a much more flexible range as well. I'd go with it.

I briefly owned an EF 20-35mm, f2.8L and it is the only Canon "L" lens that I cannot recommend. It was very soft in the corners, soft enough to not be usable until stopped down to around f5.6.

I wound up getting the EF 17-40mm, f4 USM instead and I am very happy with that lens on the crop 1.3x and full-frame cameras.

On a Canon crop 1.6x camera body I would suggest the Tamron you mentioned as being a very good choice. I wound up getting the Canon EF-S 17-55mm, f/2.8 IS USM and I do suggest that it is worth the extra money and does provide Canon "L" quality images.
