I'm curious how many people have had to send their 24-70 L glass in for focus repairs.

Mine is about 2 years old and it is in the shop now. I have been told this is common. I'm also curious what the out of warranty repair costs were.

thanks

I haven't, but I have a 5D MKII and had to adjust the focus almost all the way to the max to fix the front focusing.

I would have had to send it in right away if I didn't have the micro adjustment option.

I've never started a poll here before... how come I can't see results or how many voted?

We use the same poll system for voting in the contests and challenges. In order to make them fair the ability to see results had to be turned off until the poll ends.

One of the moderators, myself included, can shut down the poll anytime you wish. Then the results are made visible. Otherwise the poll ends when you programmed it to and then the results are visible.

hmmmm... not sure I programed it do do anything. What is the default? I'd like to get 20-30+ votes before I shut it down. Maybe you can take a peek and shut it down when that many people have voted, or in a week. Whichever is sooner. If you can't see quantity of votes then just give it about a week for me.

    Thanks ziggy.

Mine had a back focusing problem. Paid $173 to get it fixed by Canon in Irvine about 1.5 years ago. L lenses are high quality but they're not immune to mechanical problems and electronic component failure.

I set the poll to close after 7 days which looks like it will be on May 22 or so.

I had a focus ring mount that apparently cracked. The problem was obvious when it occured. The focus began to stutter it's way along and never got where it was going. Since the repair it has worked like a charm.

it is damn eassy to get spoiled by L-glass... I'm using a tammy 28-105 f2.8 for a backup and the af is slow, the images wide open are soft, it is good to have and probably a very fine lens by most standards but it is'nt l-glass in any way. I also wonder if it is actually f2.8... it seems to not record as much light as my 70-200 f2.8L in the same situation and it really struggles focusing in low light. Ah well, I should have my baby back in a few days.

Well, still waiting for the return ship. Man I am spoiled by that lens! Mid way through a Bat Mitzvah today and wishing I had my L-glass back! I have an e-session next weekend so hopefully I will have it in hand for that.

    Matt,

Sorry, I don't work with polls very often. Apparently one of the mods has to close the poll manually before they are visible. Hopefully it is visible now.

no problem ziggy. All good now. Thanks! Interesting results... Just goes to show that the people who don't have problems are likely to not say anything. Based on what you read around the web you would think 1/2 the lenses they ship develop this problem!

In other news, I got my lens back today and it is back to it's original perfect self.

    Matt

*edit* BTW thanks to everyone for voting.

Well, I figured I would dig this one up again since I had to send my 24-70 back in for the same thing. Almost a year to the day. Service warranty is only 6 months. After some mild complaining I got free shipping to the facility and a 20% discount on the repair so it should be about $100 shipped back to me this time around. I sure hope this doesn't turn out to be a yearly expense for me! They're lucky I flibbin LOVE this lens!
