The overcast day blues!

It had been overcast here in the OC for a few days now. I shot these Forster's Terns at Bolsa Chica. To avoid the dreary gray shots I set my white balance to tungsten, and put a CTO gel on my flash. All shot with my 70-200 IS F2.8

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

    what Harry said! :D

those terns must've been flying pretty close to get so much fill-in from your flash... either that or you have a searchlight mounted on your camera! eek7.gif

    Love these captures Glenn. clap.gif

Do you normally shoot birds with a flash? Do you use high speed synch? Shed a little wisdom here if you would.

    Thanks,

Terns are a lot of fun to photograph and are magnificent hunters. Well taken.

Thanks Harry! Overcast is usually a time for me to experiment.

I usually use flash unless the ambient lighting is perfect. These were shot with synced flash @ 1/250 sec. If there was more light I would have switched to high speed sync, and used the flash as fill rather than the main light. I did not use my better beamer on these shots, which was a mistake.

Thanks Chris! These Forster's tern are bold, and make for good photography.

Thanks Glenn for your answers. How far does a better beamer with a 580 EXII work.

A 580 EX paired with a better beamer has alot of range. But more importantly it seems to make the TTL balance when using a long lense more accurate.

Thanks very much Glennn. I have not yet purchased a BB, but I'm going to try using my 580 EX II on my bird shots for the next several days.
