Canon 10-22 or 17-40

I just got my 5D (original) and I still have a 30D. I love both cameras but I really wonder if I should change my 10-22 to a 17-40. They both sell for $699 on B&H so I figured I may be able to find someone who would swap. Who knows.

Should I swap it to the 17-40? What are the image quality differences (I know it's hard to compare these).

Thanks

The 10-22 will not even mount on the 5D. I loved my 17-40/4 on my 40D but I had to swap to a 10-22 because there were some shots that I needed to go wider still. Otherwise I would have kept the 17-40/4L.

They are about the same price, about the same image quality. I did locate a lens-for-lens swap here on DGrin about a year ago. If you decide to go that route I would think you could do the same.

If you intend to keep the 30D then you might want to keep the EF-S 10-22mm, f3.5-f4.5 USM. The combination is so much more compact that I continue to take the crop camera (in my case the 40D and Sigma 10-20mm, f4-f5.6 EX DC HSM) even though the full-frame camera takes (potentially) superior images.

I do love the EF 17-40mm, f4L USM and on a full-frame body it is a splendid combination. I don't think it's an astonishing improvement over the smaller format camera and lens however.

I would keep 17-40L since it can be used with both cameras.

what about 30D+17-40 for standard shooting

Yep, I realize it won't mount. I'm keeping the 30D though. However if I just want to go somewhere with just one body I will loose the UWA range.

On photozone they show there are trade offs. The 10-22 has better extreme edge sharpness, less vignetting, and less distortion. The 17-40 has better center resolution and better build though. The center resolution may not matter because the 10-22 is probably beyond the point that the 30D can resolve.

I guess I'll stay with it until I'm ready to have 2 FF bodies. Thanks All.
