Photo count for galleries

Sorry if this is simple but if it exists then I just can't find it and a search of this forum hasn't turned anything up for me.
Is there a way of displaying the number of photos in each gallery on the home page?
I'm using smugmug to store photos of a long trip overseas and I'd like my friends to be able to see VERY easily if I've put new photos up.
So if a photo count isn't possible then putting the text that says when the gallery was last updated, in bold or a different colour from the rest of the text might work. Is it possible to single that text out? If this is the way to go, could someone please explain how to do it.

I'm using smugmug as kind of a photo-oriented blog. So I'm trying to make it as easy as possible for my friends to spot if (and in what gallery) I've loaded new photos. In my own experience of reading other peoples' travel sites, it's the number of photos uploaded that I tend to remember.
The alternative to a count of the photos in each gallery would be to highlight the date that each gallery was last updated, perhaps in a different colour from the rest of the text, or bold.
This is the bit I mean:

Its default is smaller than the rest of the text and italicised, which tends to make the reader ignore it for some reason.
(A third idea, that I just thought of, is to retrieve stats like <gallery name> and <last updated>, in some form of text file so I can send updates to a group of email addresses. But that's getting way too involved, especially if there's a simpler way.)
Any ideas will help, thanks
