I love shooting people and enjoy it so much more when they are doing what they do best.

Shot under the skater with the Nikon 24mm 2.8 fill flash with an SB900 off camera.

    Nice catch! thumb.gif

Did you consider using HSS? 1/250 is a bit slow for the action shooting... ne_nau.gif

It was shot at 1/400th and was using HSS plus using a lens that wide hides most action blurring effects. I couldn't go any further with the shutter as I kept the flash at 1/4 manually so it could fire 8fps and capture these guys nailing their tricks.

Huh... Interesting... His right hand still seems to be blurred, if just a little... Maybe going with higher ISO would help to freeze it then... Just a thought headscratch.gif

His had is blurry because his limbs are moving at faster motions than the rest of his body (most likely stop action on the hands at about 1/1000) and HSS burst light which doesn't truly stop action that well in this instance.

The hand is partially illuminated by the sun unlike most of his body which was illuminated by the flash. This gives us a ghosting effect as the sun light portion of his hand exposed and different portions than the millisecond difference between ambient coming in and the flash firing. If he was lit completely by the sun we wouldn't have this issue or completely lit by the flash.

Also, if I used a shutter of 250th the sky would have been blown out and i'd have to gain back by using the aperture which wouldn't allow me to use the flash efficiently at 8fps.. more like 4-5fps at 1/2 or near full power. Same is true with a higher shutter speed where the HSS has to burst longer and harder at the faster shutter speeds making it again not powerful or fast enough for this type of action.

    Gotta love camera math :)

Chris, this is a great shot. Does your raw converter have the ability to bring out more of the blue in the sky? That and a little more contrast between the clouds and you really will have a stunner. Great job on the fill flash.

    Great bg and action shot.

The way to freeze the hand in this setting is to use 2-3 flashes at, (I'm just making up a guess here), 1/8 power.
