Smugmug I urge you to stop associating with a soft porn Domain Registrar!

Listening to Leo on The Tech Guy today, he is anti Godaddy and from the description of the latest commercials, they've gone beyond the sexy (aka using women as objects and meat which is beyond disgusting) to producing soft porn commercials!

I am using GoDaddy for all my domains (excluding .ca), but now want to get away from them as fast as humanly possible) and as cheaply as possible as I am on a low fixed income). I was going to switch to SmugmugDomains.com no coupons to deal with for renewals, truly low prices, but since it's powered by GoDaddy and they profit off of you as a reseller,

I Urge Smugmug to stop being associated with a soft porn domain registrar/registrar who treats women as meat and not equals to men!

Can you provide a youtube link to the specific ad? I want to see myself. Maybe i'll join your crusade.

I don't even want to look at the ads. but the "Hot Ads" link is at GoDaddy.com. I don't want to burn my buys with the crap.

Wow, sounds like you've really thought this through. Based on someone's angry rant, and without actually viewing the videos yourself, you've decided that smugmug should heed your eminently informed recommendation to end a business relationship that is very successful and beneficial to their users. You assure us that the commercials are "soft porn" even though by your own admission you've never seen them. Well, I just wasted several minutes of my life (that I will never get back) watching the "internet only" ads on their site. What I found was juvenile, un-funny, assinine, and crass advertisements designed to do only one thing: make the viewer remember the "godaddy.com" url. And in that respect, they are successful. There was narry a nipple to be seen, however, and I doubt you need to worry about these commericals reversing the last 50 years of feminist progress in our country. So, basically, my question is this:

Are you a total idiot, or just a troll?

Either way, the joke's on me I guess, since I've already wasted so much time on you. Damn.

The ads were described very vividly and that was way too much. I absolutely want to use SmugmugDomains.com but with Godaddy still doing all the work, I don't want to support them. If you saw the ad or heard the description you would agree they are suggesting the girl pulling over the nascar was going to strip down and screw the other girl. That to me is beyond disgusting.

So you think homosexuality is disgusting? I think SmugMug should cancel your account to avoid any association with your repellent bigotry! rolleyes1.gif

Yes, I am the SmugMug Domain setup Guru. These are my personal feelings and not that of SmugMug.

I am not even going to address the content of the ads.

Please, Please, Please do not run off and sign up with some fly by night, or crappy domain service just because they agree with your "point of view"...

I have literally worked with hundreds of domain companies in the last 2 years. I can tell you that GoDaddy is one of the best, if not "the" best as far as user controls, interface, and setup. Statistics wise I have had the smallest percentage of problems out of them.

There are some that you might love due to their public facing persona. But, I can tell you from experience they stink at what you are paying them to do. Some will offer very low prices, but you really do get what you pay for.

I am not pushing GoDaddy. But there are much worse companies that you could be dealing with.

Isn't there some old adage that stated sex sells?
With the original post, more people have stopped to see the godaddy ads. I had never visited the godaddy site until this thread started.

Now if I were to follow the logic and not support companies who use women to sell their products or services, I would have to stop drinking soda, water, beer, liquor, stop buying cars, trucks, stop taking cruises, never visit Hawaii, Vegas, Florida, California, any of the tropical islands. Then I would have to stop supporting Nikon, Nike, Levi's, never pick up a fashion magazine, completely throw out my television, never again log onto the internet, go to a theatre.
As good as that sounds, life is too short to waste another second worrying about some company who is doing nothing short of providing great service.

Nothing is keeping you with godaddy. Pay whatever no name service you want, and get on with life.

OK.......I just checked out those horrible adds...............If this is what you call soft porn, I would suggest you further define it as akin to bunnies, and fluffy pillows with a Juvenal twist type porn.

Seriously, if you really think this (which of course you have never actually seen) is bad and will lead to the collapse of civilization, what the heck are you dong on the Internet?? Do you have any idea what is on the Internet? Have you actually seen the Internet, or is this the un-medicated one of you posting?

You should immediately stop supporting the Internet.

I have had lots of domains hosted at Godaddy for years. I love the interface and the tools. I'd recommend them to anyone, even my mom. Two things -

    1) If you think this is porn, you either haven't seen the ads, or you're being too puritanical.
    2) I find the ads offend my sensibilities as an adult. They seem to be aimed at 16 year old boys rather than adults. But...... that doesn't make the company bad, or the product crap. It just means their marketing is a total swing and a miss for me. I suspect they lose plenty of customers over the dumbness of the ads, but it's not porn. Hell, it's hardly even PG.

Did I ever say I was anti homosexuals? No the ads is geared towards men suggesting that if they go to godaddys site, that they will see girl on girl action.

As for other registrars or resellers ofregistars there are tens of good ones that don't do suggestive tv advertising as Godaddy has done

You said the idea of two women having sex is, in your words, "beyond disgusting". Sounds anti-gay to me.

Who cares. He's entitled to whatever opinions and beliefs he chooses to have. The point is that no one else is obligated to care about his rantings or to capitulate to his demands. If he's not happy with how smugmug runs its business, he can go elsewhere.

Exactly. Welcome to satire, nice to have you around. The idea that Smugmug should dump GoDaddy because this guy doesn't like its commercials is just as silly as the idea that Smugmug should kick him out because of his personal beliefs.

What's satire? Is it like sarcasm, because someone once tried to explain that to me but I didn't understand it. I think they may have been being facetious as well, which didn't help.

I am not remotely against two women having sex (or two men), When "The Tech Guy" from Sunday is posted, I will post a link so everyone can hear the original rant that started this all.

No, it's not "like" sarcasm, it's the use of sarcasm to mock someone else's BS:
satire: the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.
The dictionary: There to help. thumb.gif

My day job is an IT professional for small businesses. We use eNom (mostly) and Network Solutions.

Why? Because they are much more professional about handling domain names. We had a new client whom had their old domain on GoDaddy. They lost the domain because someone called GoDaddy claiming to be them and changed the e-mail address of the renewal notifications. The domain expired and the next day (well the day it became available to register), the domain was registered by someone else at GoDaddy. Makes you think. Is GoDaddy just a mass domain name seller that does not care about the security of their customer's domains? My client is a small company so their lawyer said it was not worth suing GoDaddy over it.

eNom caters to the reseller. Their setup actually allows the reseller to manage the domains for their customers. They even provide notifications of when domains are about to expire to the reseller, so we can notify the end-user. A little more money per year, but worth every penny.

Maybe SmugMug should consider that. What good is a customer having a Pro account if their domain expires and is lost? SmugMug may want this option to notify the customer in addition to the registrar's notification of domain renewals. Something to think about?

    Oh, good grief
Watch the ad. Nothing in it suggests "girl on girl action" at all. It's actually pretty funny.

Does your neck hurt from that?
Um, that is a safety issue.
