Since when do posts need to be approved? Is this something new? I just tried to post a reply in a thread, got a mesg saying "awesome - we received your post, if it's approved you'll see it shortly."

In the past, I believe a post appeared immediately.

Posting to the whipping post I assume? If so - then yes it is moderated now.
