for surfing you can probably get away with the 55-200mm VR which is cheap. You won't need the wide aperture since you will assumably shooting in broad daylight. Or the 70-300mm depending on how close you want to get..probely this one now that I think of it.

Budget always comes to mind when I hear these questions.
How much do you want to spend?

    I shot this stuff on a 5DM2 with a 70-200/2.8 IS and 2x extender.
We were fairly close to the break, its not always like that though.
If I had the budget right now Id add a 400/2.8 and 1.4 ext to my kit.

Have you consider the so called "bigma" (Sigma 50-500mm)? I have one that I use for sports, animals, birds, and I am considering going to the beach to take photos of surfers.

The biggest bonus of this lens is its reach, and it take excellent photos. The biggest con is its weight, about 7 pounds. It does not have VR so you will need at least a monopod.

When you consider that you can pick up this lens for about $1000.00 what you get for the price makes it a good buy.

The other problem is that you have to be careful that airport security does not confuse it with a bazooka!

    Have fun in Mexico!
