Help Quick - GoDaddy Domain name

I'm in the process, literally, of buying my dmoain name from GoDaddy. Seems there's alot of add-ons. I did the protected upgrade and now I'm at the SSL part. Is it necessary to have an SSL certificate? Does Smug provide one covering everyone?
