Where did my memory go?

I had my computer rebuilt/updated and when I inserted the SD memory card into the reader it said that the card needed to be formatted. So I downloaded the images onto another computer and formatted it in my camera, reinserted it in my computer and I get the same message. So I have the computer format the card and after its done so I see that half the memory is gone - properties show only 968mb. :scratch I have been using Sandisk Extreme III 2.GB cards. What did I do wrong and is it permanent?

Thanks

Or you could start Disk Ulititly (on mac) or disk management (on windows) to see how the card is partitioned. Sometimes a card is not recognized with full capacity and when it gets formated some free space is left unused and unavailable until the card gets repartitioned and formated.
