Ok all, I'm looking into a couple different battery grips. There is one that holds 2 Nikon batteries, or 6 aa batteries. There is also one that has a built in battery. Does anyone have either of them?

In particular I'm looking at the one that holds Nikon batteries. Do you HAVE to use 2 or will it run on one?

Does anyone have either of these grips? What do you think of them?

I don't have either of those battery grips, but I thought you might like to see this option as well. It has some additional functions like a timer.

I shoot canon so can't say specifics of those grips of course, but....

If you get a grip with an internal battery, what happens if the battery dies on site?

I know I am using a 50D with a grip. I use two Canon batteries in the grip and they seem to last forever. BUT... If I kill the batteries I have a single battery for backup, and use the BG-E2 will run on 1 battery, as I assume the Nikon equivalents would.

Just looked at the links you provided as well.

The grip with removable batteries has a vertical shutter button, the internal battery grip does NOT.

If it is important to you than the answer should be clear.

Personally I could no longer live without a vertical shutter release. Sunday and Tuesday I took around 3000 pictures, all portrait orientation. My arms were sore as it was, could not imagine if I did not have the vertical camera controls.

I have the Targus. It will work with either 1 or 2 EN-EL-9 batteries installed.

Works well, I like the 6 AA option if I run out of juice away from an outlet.
