I apoligize if this has been covered here before. After two hours of searching through past threads I could not locate what I was looking for.
Does anybody have experience with the Quantum Trio flashes?
Will the Quantum flashes give me better light than my 580 ex ll??
Is it a more powerful light???
I currently have (4) Profoto 600R Compacts. I know I need to eventually add two more lights so that I can have two seperate light set ups at the same time with three lights each for Proms. I also know I need to add a second flash (just in case the first one breaks) and before I purchase a second 580 I was wondering if the Quantums would be a better way to go. I also photograph Senior Portraits and a lot of sports action shots.
The Quantums seem very expensive and I really dont know anything about them. I also worry about the battery going dead while photographing a prom, I would need extra batteries which are expensive. (An AC cord is availabe but cost the same as a battery.) Maybe the Quantums work great for portraits or action sports??
Totally confused. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance and sorry if I rambled on.

I use Sigma EF 500 DG Super flashes at events along with a couple of modifiers and I am very pleased with their performance. I can vouch for their E-TTL II and E-TTL operation as being accurate and correct. The new models are the EF 530 DG Super flashes and they seem to be working well for other folks but I have yet to get one myself or even see one in action. They are basically just a little more powerful and a little more expensive than the previous flash. They are a very good "value" flash and I can get around 250 flashes per 4 - AA battery set using the modifier and at ISO 800, f4 to f5.6.
I have not done them but if I were to do a "booth" at a prom, I would either use studio monolights, if I had access to AC power, or use Sunpak 622 Super Pro handle-bracket flashes for a battery operated portable flash. I currently have 4 of the older Sunpak 611 flashes that I have tested, but never used at an event, and they have enough power and manual control to suffice for many circumstances.
You can "cluster" speedlights to either add power or to reduce the power on each speedlight to gain recycle speed. I have been looking at some cheap auto/manual compact flashes with the intent of clustering into an umbrella but I just haven't done it yet.

Thanks for the direction,
During my searching around in the archives I saw the sunpak 622 were mentioned by several others. I looked them up after your advice and see what they look like. I will do more research. Thanks.
:ivar The TRIO has a better quality of light due to the parabolic reflector it uses. The plastic fresnel lens on a shoe mount flash is much harsher. The TRIO also will not slow down, turn off or burn up as the flashtube is outside of the case where the electronics are stored.
The TRIO is about 1/3 of an f/stop more powerful. If you need 1 to 2 f/stops more power, then their line of T5d-R and X5d-R Qflashes are what you want to look at
Thanks so much for replying. I quess if a person just bought everything we need or want we would all be happy, except the check book :cry . Please allow me say this out loud so I understand.
The Quantum lights are designed different so they are going to keep on shooting (as long as I have power - either battery or AC). This feature will be good if I am attempting to use them at an event, however strobes would probably be ideal at an event. If I went with a Quantum to use at a event and have the versatility for other things such as photographing outdoor portraits I should probably be looking at the T5d-R or the X5D-R, for more power when I do use them at a event.
The parabolic reflector is going to give me a higher quality light which would be useful for portraits or perhaps a wedding. However if I decide to purchase a couple more strobes and use a 580 ex ll for outdoor portraits rather than the Quantum I would need to use a light modifier of some sort to equal the light of the Quantum.
The one thing I probably did not mention is the new Trio's I believe have ettl capability, and can be controlled from the camera. I dont know if I need that or not .
If I got this all wrong please let me know .
I will go and take a look at the T5d-R and the X5d-R Q flashes .
Thanks
I mostly use it for events and weddings, the quality of light is very good, as compared to sb900 and sb600.
I normally use Qttl, Auto or Auto fill modes on the Qflash with wide angle diffuser on. Many pple have commented the with the WA diffuser on, it looks like Sauron's eyes, haha.
The flash is ex though, but very versatile. I got the softbox as a free gift from a local dealer. Have not used the softbox yet but will be using it soon (I hope).
