I love the loon pictures!! How far away were you and what lens were you using. We have quite a few loons on the pond where my parents live in Maine. I'm usually shooting them from a kayak, hence difficult to prevent camera shake. Your pictures are just beautiful.

Something can be said for everyplace...but the Rockies and the North Woods are on the top of my list.

    Keep 'em comin', Dan. thumb.gif

That first one makes me a little dizzy. :D Maybe you could flip it for us right to left readers.

Really nice, Dan. The mountain goat and loons are awesome. You caught the second bear in a great position. Looks like you had a good time.

Shoot in RAW because memory is cheap but memories are priceless.

The first one does it for me. Very nice work Dan thumb.gif

I've wanted to go to Banff for the last 50 years or so. You've fanned the fire again with your shots.

I have been wanting to see and capture a loon for some time now. These loons (there were 2 of them on this lake) were about 25 yards away at there closest. I had a 300 with a 1.4 tc on board giving me 420. I was on foot, and was able to get down real low to get an eye to eye view.

    Thanks for commenting Stephanie.

Looks like a great trip Dan! I like the loon shots too thumb.gif I am currently eyeing off a 300 + 1.4tc combo. Need something a bit easier to work with and more consistent than the ol Bigma.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

If you liked Banff, you REALLY need to check out Jasper, a little further north.
I grew up in, Calgary and spent countless days there, chasing down Bears (Griz & Black), Elk, Dear, Goats and Sheep in my teenage years... They have become pretty accustomed to the human influance and are, for the most part, pretty approachable when compared to their counterparts that live outside the region. Photo opp's GALORE and you've captured some dandy's; I especially like the Goat.

Awesome set! The low angle loon is fantastic and the mountain goat with surrounding environment is Nat Geo quality. thumb.gif Just to see a wild bear would be great but you got pics of both black and grizzly! Amazing trip!

Thanks so much Stephen. Finding a loon was so special to me. I tracked them all over the Rockies. I asked so many people and no one knew where I might find one. On my last day, we went to Herbert Lake. There was not a sole there, and as I arrived two birds flew in, but they were a few hundred yards away and I could not determine what they were. Then I gave my best loon call and they started swimming across the lake and disappeared into a cove. I followed swiftly and as quietly as possible and then it happened. I found my self no more than 25 yards from them. They filled my entire frame with 420 on board, and I remembered what I had learned from this forum. Get down low and shoot at their level. I was so excited.

Who ever thought this kid from NYC would find pleasure doing such things.:ivarwings.gif

Hey Mike. Nice to hear from you.

I never regretted buying that combo. Of course, now I want a 500 f/4, but I don't see one in my immediate future.

I also like the first shot the best. Haha, it made me a little dizzy, too. :D But I still like it. Neat how he seems to be looking straight at you.

That's a pretty big looking grizzly!

Appreciate what we have, instead of worrying about what we haven't. Enjoy what is, before it isn't.
