OK, went to the air show and took some more pics. I'm much more pleased with these results. I may stick with the Thunderbirds, but I've yet to process them (425 pics from the show).

Original thread http://dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=133038

Here is what I have so far. My personal favorites are 1,2,3,5 and 7

... I know I'm being a bit of a schitzo, so right now my ultimate favorite is #5

It's nice and bright at ~4,300 feet. I think my slowest shutter speed was still over 1/1000 sec ;).

I'm going through the Thunderbirds in PP now. They may take the cake for my final submittal.

    HI Silver.. awesome altitude...

I like #2 it has potential.

Too much blur on the mountains in #9...

    # 7 is strong for the singular theme.. and it is an awesome shot too..

My vote is still for bi-planes so far... or # 2 here..

will keep an eye out for the ones your posting later... nothing like being stuck on the good old photo shop highway.. I am there myself right now..

Another vote for the biplanes. thumb.gif It's pretty unique.

But what I would like to see is less of a "black" sky. It looks like a red filter was applied to the B&W photo in PS. If that's what you did, try experimenting with one of the other filters to see if you can get those planes to pop a bit more. Also, consider cropping the photo so that the planes are not dead center. Crop from the left so you leave space on the right to give the illusion that they're going "someplace".

This is a fabulous series of shots, BTW.

Wow - lots of exciting shots! thumb.gif #7 is great for singular, but I really like the "pair'a'chuters" in #6. They mirror each other nicely (repetition), and the "tails" give a great sense of movement. All it needs is some noise reduction in the sky, and maybe a tighter crop. You might try portrait orientation to emphasize height. (you could even move the duo a little closer together for composing inside the desired frame).

Thanks again for all the comments, I'll edit per them and see what I get. I'm probably going to do another thread for the Thunderbirds (my original idea for this challenge) and a final "best of" thread for C&C.

You guys and gals are great.

Benjer, I love the title you gave the "pair-a-chuters" rolleyes1.gif . The noise isn't really there in the real pics. It's actually due to the .jgp compression and banding used on the picture hosting site (me.com). It shouldn't show up on smugmug.

    For richtersl:

Here are the biplanes again, both cropped, but one with the "black sky" and one without.

I have another idea for them as well. I'm going to mask out the planes and give them their own B&W treatment.

OK, so here's that attempt of masking out the biplanes.

I love #2 as well, but ditto on the dark sky.

I did a double take on #9 - I couldn't believe you got a pic of a Rough Raider FA/18 from VFA 125! I was stationed in that squadron and for sure have plane captain(ed) that jet several times (though I honestly can't remember a specific time since we had so many jets eh). I used to pimp out the Rough Raider viking patch with the dagger in his mouth lol - oh the memories rolleyes1.gif

    HI Silver..

I love this last edit you did on the bi-planes. I prefer the dark sky all day long.........

it shows off the clouds and the planes and really makes the entire photo unique...

I also like your original bi-planes too from your very first post...

I am looking forward to the New Thunderbird Thread..thumb.gif
