I have wanted to ask this question for a long time, but been a bit scared to ask... Let me start by saying I don't expect to gain overnight stardom, perfection, notoriety, wealth or anything along those lines. I respect the real professionals and the time they put in and years of experience. I have long admired the photogs on the sidelines who get the great shots. I am no where near that yet. Where does one start and get their foot in the door? I have no idea what a pro gets or makes with those shots published, but would love to get to the point of having the opportunity to get the shot. There are a few pros in my area (as seen by the location listed on SportsShooter ) but I am a bit shy to talk to them. I don't want them thinking I am trying to push my way in and tread on their territory. I have a long way to go, and I know that. I guess with the thousands of people out there trying to become photographers, (yes, I realize I am one of them), I want to make sure I go about it the right way. Is it a no-no to send photos to a magazine or newspaper without talking to them first? Guess I just need some guidance. Hope I didn't come across the wrong way here.

I'm no expert either, but several articles I've read suggest starting with local sports teams first. Start with little league / high school and build your skills there. Most league commissioners / coaches at that level will be thrilled to have someone taking pictures.

Then when you feel you're good enough, contact some local papers / websites and show them your work. If you can negotiate something, that's where you start being a member of the "media" and can start getting press passes to restricted events.
