Size for Gallery

What is the best size or ratio to crop to when adding images to a SmugMug gallery?

I turn off "Printable" because it's not my intent to have photographs purchased. They're just up there for display.

The standard gallery view seems to be a max of 800 x 600, but I would like a larger version to be clickable if the viewer wants to see it.

Of course with no right click protection and showing original sizes, at your high resolution sizes it is a no brainer for anyone to download and print wherever they choose. So why not enable the buy button by making them printable and maybe letting smugmug get some business through you if people want prints?

For me and cropping my pictures...

I usually leave them as a 4x6 ratio and not worry about actual size. Upload the full res picture to smugmug and let the smugmug buttons change the size for whoever is viewing, or if I am sharing on the forums and such.
Latest set I cropped in a 8x10 ratio and I like that ratio very much. I also feel it is easier to crop from 8x10 to 4x6 or other size as needed.
Of course if I ever start selling my prints I use lightroom and take orders manually so re cropping them would be a no brainer.

Hope that gives you my opinions of the points you made, including making your photos not printable.

    Good points.

I don't object to people downloading any photograph they want. I turn off the "printable" because I don't want viewers to think that I'm linking to my SmugMug site in order to sell photographs.
