file size:composition ratio?

Hi everyone,

Just curious - is there a relationship between how big a file is and the complexity of the picture? Would, say, a picture of a detailed mosaic tile pattern result in a bigger file than, say, a picture of a lamp? Does greater pixel color variation mean bigger file?

thx!

For JPG and most RAW files, yes. The more large areas of undifferentiated color there are, the smaller the file. IIRC, this is not true of uncompressed TIFF files. This is due to the encoding schemes, which generally can compress a long series of identical pixels.
