Images being resized in one gallery.

Ive uploaded 7 pics to this gallery
http://davepearce.smugmug.com/gallery/538070_GVEd5#565335819_5BQCz
And they are being reduced in size.
Its just the first 7 pics. In fact this time i uploaded them to another gallery (they looked fine although a little soft compared to the original files) and moved them to this one and the same thing has happened.
Ive tried the normal uploader and the send to smugmug from LR2.3, both with the same result.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

dave.

    Its worse than i thought.
Although i have uploaded the pics to another gallery i can see that they are being enlarged somehow to fill the correct frame size. when i move them to the correct gallery they are sharper but smaller.

    Somethings not right here.

Can you try one photo again with our Simple uploader?
Lets start by dragging the file you want to upload to your desktop so that you have it in view and it doesn't get confused with other files.
Right-click on the file and select properties. What's the file size of it? Note that. Keep in mind that we can't accept files larger than 12MB per our supported files help page.

Create a test gallery and make sure that our Simple uploader is selected. Drag the file from the desktop into it, upload the file and post the link to it here along with the file size you noted from the file on your desktop.

    Thanks for the reply.
Ive just remembered i posted in another thread just after i started this one.

Andy tried to help me out and we concluded it was a bug. He could also replicate this.
I have to rotate the images once uploaded and then rotate them back and then they look fine.
Andy said it was being looked in to but that was a while ago.

I can do what you ask but i dont think this will help as ive already covered these steps.

Ah sorry. It wasnt Andy, it was Smugmug support i raised this with.

    This is what was said.

    Hi Dave

Thanks for contacting SmugMug. It is possible that the problem may be related to the image's pixel dimensions, but this is definitely a bug, a problem that shouldn't exist. There is no problem with your images per se, but something funny is happening when we are generating the display copies of the images. I will agree, that this seems to affect images smaller than 800 pixels on a side, so maybe this is part of the equation. You could test this by trying an upload an image 798 px on a side, and the same image 800 px on a side and see if there's a difference in the way they're displayed.

We constantly make improvements to the site, and it's possible that some bug was introduced somewhere along the way that's causing this problem.
I was able to reproduce the same problem on my own site as well, so it's something that we're taking seriously, and hope to fix very soon. I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you at this time, but do know that we're working to get this fixed as soon as possible. Thanks again, and have a great day!

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for getting back to us. We seem to have the problem narrowed down to smaller images, images smaller than our Large display size (800x600). Larger images do not seem to be affected. I've already forwarded along this problem to our engineers, so we are working towards a solution as we speak. Sorry for the trouble here, and keep us posted if you notice any other strange behavior such as this. Thank you, and have a great day!

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for contacting SmugMug. This appears to be some kind of bug with the way we generated the display size images. I was able to repair these display copies for you, so these should be displaying properly in the gallery now, without the large border. We're investigating the cause of this problem. If you do see this in the future, you can fix the problem by rotating an image (Tools > Many Photos > Rotate), and then rotate them back again. It appears like this may be a related problem with the pic of the P-Bass. I rotated and un-rotated it, and it looks a bit sharper to me. If you do see this problem again, please let us know.

I hope this helps, but please let us know if you have any further questions about this. Thank you, and have a great day!

Ive just realized the images i uploaded earlier today were only 798 x 522 so i guess this is why the bug was triggered. ill make sure they are 800 x533 from now on as this seems to be ok.

    Thanks.

    Hi Dave,

Ahh, now I see what you meant. Yes, this is a bug.
I was thought you meant that your original photos turned out smaller after uploading.
Yes, uploading at 800 pixel on the longest side and larger should work around the bug.

    Sorry for any hassle.

yeah, sorry i should have been clearer.
There also seem to be something funny going on in LightRoom 2.4 as my images are coming out between 798 and 800, even though ive set them to be 800 long and thats why im seeing the problem in my Galleries.
Ill keep an eye on my dimensions.

    Thanks for the help.

That could be some rounding issue due to an odd sized crop. Would it be a problem to just set the photos to 810 or something pixel? That should add sufficient breathing room for this.

Ive been using 800 x 532 (or 533) ever since i signed up to Smugmug (3 or 4 years ago i think). I settled on 800 pixels so the images didn't get reduced as i was noticing a slight IQ reduction at L size if the images had to be shrunk down.
Im pretty sure there is a bug in LR2.4 as im using the same presets i created a year or so ago and i also only get this issue on one PC at work, my home one is running LR2.3 and it seems fine.

    Thanks again.

    Dave.
