Images in some of my galleries won't render larger than 'medium'.

This has been occurring intermittently for several weeks now; it happens in various galleries and not always to all the photos in a particular gallery. Currently, for example, the first seven images in this gallery http://www.djdigitaldave.net/gallery/8402185_4y6Xb will render 'large' and then beginning with the eighth photo, random images will only render as 'medium'.

These symptoms are also replicated when viewing a slideshow of an "infected" gallery, though sometimes an image that is stuck on 'medium' in the gallery will render 'large' in the slideshow but is actually a poorly scaled version of the 'medium' image.

This phenomenon manifests on IE, Firefox, and Safari, and on several different computers. The problem can last aywhere from hours to days, and will disappear for a time before re-occurring. All browser caches cleared.

My site has javascript that forces all of my photos to 'large' but the problem also manifests in this version of the same gallery http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/8402185_4y6Xb where the javascript is inactive.

Any information with regard to this issue would be appreciated.

    Hi Dave,

Sorry for your trouble. I fixed the gallery by rotating the photos left and then right again.
Let us know if you see this on any newly uploaded galleries. It shouldn't happen anymore.

Wow. Your fix is something that certainly never would have occurred to me to try! I suppose that if the problem pops up again, I'll just do what you did. The interesting thing is that the problem has not been limited to newly uploaded photos nor to newly created galleries. I think perhaps I'll just skip trying to understand the underlying basis of this particular issue!:D

Thank you very much for taking care of this for me and for cluing me in to the solution. It is much appreciated.

Well, it seems that the problem is recurring on every new upload now, though it appears to be specific to landscape-oriented images.

I left the current upload as-is (didn't do the rotate-left, rotate-right trick) so as to perhaps give you additional insight into the basis of the problem. The current upload begins with this photo http://www.djdigitaldave.net/gallery/8402185_4y6Xb/5/568124359_euzWB/Large and continues to the end of the gallery on the page that follows (a total of about eighteen photos).

If you have any additional advice or if there is anything that I can do differently during the upload process that you think might address the problem, please let me know.

Thank you again for your help!

    Hi Dave,

Sorry, but we have no real fix for that yet. It's been reported to our engineers. One possible workaround is to disable the right-click protection. That would result in the photos rendering properly. It even works if you uploaded photos with protection enabled.
The issue seems to be limited to such small photos as you uploaded as I haven't seen it elsewhere.

    My apologies for any inconvenience.

Thank you, Sebastian. I appreciate your hepl.

Would it be possible for me to be notified, perhaps via email, if and when a fix is established? I don't mind disabling the right-click protection in my galleries as I have my own javascript-based version of right-click protection active. However, if anybody were to access an image by simply replacing my domain in the URL with 'smugmug.com', they'd be able to bypass my javascript and save the photo. Thus, if a fix is found, I'd love to know so that I could re-activate Smugmug's native right-click protection.

As you mention that the problem seems to be exclusive to relatively small images, I may try uploading larger versions. I've been working under the perhaps misguided assumption that if I upload photos that are already sized to Smugmug's 'large' dimensions, then Smugmug's software would not reproduce and re-sharpen a display copy (thus preserving my original image and its particular post-processing). Do you happen to know if that is the case? If it were not, then I'd be less disinclined to upload photos with larger dimensions because they'd all be reproduced for display to a 'large'-sized version irrespective of their original size.

Thank you again for your help and your prompt reply, Sebastian. This is why I love Smugmug!

Just noticed something: While disabling right-click protection does indeed allow a large image to render, it is not the actual large image. Rather, it is the medium image scaled to the large size. You can clearly see the stair-stepping and pixellation.

I will leave this gallery with the right-click functionality disabled so you can see what I mean.

    Thanks again, Sebastian.
