Why is there a link at the bottom of my pages to "nigritude ultramarine" , a smugmug site with action figures and cologne???

Looks like we got us some sensitive customers here.

No, you sites haven't been hacked, and yes, we're trying to participate in an online search engine contest. We thought our customers could have some fun with it and help us out.

Guess we shoulda have thought about the wording a little bit, eh? I figured most people don't even bother looking at the footer.

I did, however, think people would read about nigritude ultramarine and understand.

What more can we do to make sure people realize it's a smugmug-sactioned, fun experiment, guys? Give me a hand here, my employees are about to lynch me over our 3 "have you been hacked?!?!" emails (thanks Andy!

Winning the nigritude ultramarine challenge for a geek like onethumb would be like Andy getting his photos on the Times Square Jumbotron.

Don (onethumb) added some text to the link to show it's a contest, not advertising anyone's product and not a hack. And we took it off the bottom of customized pages (it was never supposed to be on those...sorry).

Sorry for the scare and we hope you can bear with us for a few weeks while the contest runs.

make it more clear on the smug page you created, that this *is* smug sanctioned

it looks a bit hackerish (to me, anyhow) so my antennae went up immediately...

also, put a one-liner in the "for your eyes only" section maybe.

I know the contest may seem a bit self-serving, but just about every pro photographer wants to know how to make their pages rank high on Google. As Andy can say, we do our best to share whatever knowledge we have about it and to optimize smugmug so your pages are ranked high.

I actually brought up the idea of entering this contest because I thought it would test our knowledge of Google and push it to the next level.

I don't really have a problem with it now that I know what's going on and as long as smugmug doesn't get like ofoto and others with advertising etc. My understanding is that's not in the business plan.

By the way, does it matter if the link actually says Nigritude Ultramarine or can it say anything at all and still count towards a Google search for Nigritude Ultramarine?

And what happens to the poor buggers who mispell Nigritude Ultramarine? I see that Google offers an alternative spelling to Nigritude Ultramarine so I assume that lots of people are spelling Nigritude Ultramarine incorrectly. That's a shame.

Cool, wxwax! Every link helps. You'll see us rise in the rankings as they index sites with links to us.

It isn't so much about the winning as the learning. It's fascinating and eductaional to see how much links matter versus the words on the page, etc.

Yes, it helps to have the words nigritude ultramarine in the link, as opposed to other words. Google scores it higher that way.

They have an alternative spelling because the word negritude is probably more common than nigritude (they are both real words).

On Google today, we're on the 3rd page. Depending on which portion of the cluster you hit, we're #21 through #25. The important thing is that we've risen so quickly, have relatively few links to us, and are already higher than Slashdot's story about the contest.

You can help a great deal by adding links to other sites (forums, blogs, homepages, personal sites, etc) you may frequent.

I think the smugmug + ADVrider + dgrin communities could win this thing if we keep at it.
