And a different Canon question

I posted in a separate thread about my dropped Canon. This is a different camera.

My parents also have a Canon Powershot (A630). They describe a very strange question:

We have a Powershot A630 , a 8.0 mega pixel camera. The problem we've encountered is the camera will not take a picture on automatic or any setting needing the flash. It will take a picture on other settings such as scene, portrait etc.

The Powershot A630 uses AA batteries. The first thing to try is new batteries. I recommend lithium non-rechargeable for testing. If the lithium batteries do the trick but they want to use rechargeable batteries, I suggest the newer advanced NiMH kind like the Sanyo "Eneloop" brand.

If new batteries don't help, tell them to reset the camera and try again.

First reset the menus according to p25 of the User Manual or the PDF here:

    http://faculty.ncarts.edu/film/manuals/canon_a630_advanced.pdf

Many cameras may be reset by taking out all batteries, usually the main battery plus a CMOS backup battery, and then letting the unit sit for a few hours. After the time has passed, re-insert all batteries and try again. (I'm not sure if the A630 has a CMOS battery. It may only have AA batteries to remove.)

If that doesn't work, I suggest taling it to their place of purchase for assistance and remediation.

Thanks! I'll have them try that out.
