These photos are from a tournament of the Boston Ultimate Disk Association in Devens, MA. All are shot from the sidelines, center field with the 70-200 f/2.8L IS and a Digital Rebel XTi. My friends are on the team called "Gratuitous" - in this set of shots Gratuitous (wearing blue) plays a Worcester area team (wearing white) followed by a second game where Gratuitous (wearing white) plays a Canadian team (wearing black).

We don't get much in the way of Ultimate shots.

One comment is to watch the backgrounds. #4 & #6 have the least distracting backgrounds.

Yeah, I haven't seen many Ultimate shots on here. The game can be hard to shoot. It is very fast paced and the action moves back and forth across the field a lot. In many of the shots I was able to capture the disc in play. I alternated between a strategy of trying to follow the game play around, versus concentrating on one person and waiting until the disc came to them. Both strategies worked well, they yielded different shots. It is very difficult to get shots of catching if you are attempting to follow the disk.

The Rebel XTi's biggest shortcoming here was the low shot rate/small burst buffer. It takes a while to write out once you fill the buffer, too. I shoot RAW only.

I liked in shot #3 the players on the sidelines with bemused faces as Justin caught the disc. Otherwise it is tough to eliminate background clutter under these circumstances. There are lots of games going on in fields surrounding this one, so basically any direction has clutter.

For action sports, shooting in your best quality .jpg's will not get you thrown out the of sports photographer's guild. Action sports have a decisive moment, if you miss it because your camera's buffer has choked, the shot is not coming back.
