Craig the MFD of the MPE-65 is 1.5" in front of the lens (at 5:1) these were taken with about 2" focus distance at 3:1.
This particular hoverly (Melanostoma) is slightly shade loving and easier to get close to sometimes. Otherwise, normally feeding hoverflies are easier to get closer to obviously with due care on the approach.

shoots things with a D80, an F1, and a Diana F+
