Lovely capture- one of the Tabanids- a biting fly- probably a deer fly- good job it didn't spot you. They do have wonderfully coloured eyes though

Brian, I think you're right about it being a deer fly - I've looked it up and it certainly fits. Most others I've seen photographed have the eye colours distributed in straight bands rather than wiggly ones like this though.
