Jelly Fish at the Baltimore Aquarium

Hi Folks:

An odd one for me, I don't take photos of animals very often, but the other day I had the opportunity to visit the Baltimore Aquarium and decided to try "my hand" at the Jelly Fish. The jellies, as folks were calling them, were a riot. Lots of folks were trying to take pics of the Jellies. They were the most popular exhibit. I only took a few shots, handheld, upped the ISO and got very close to the tank walls. I used a Nikon 35-70mm 2.8, and took a few of these with the macro feature of the lens (quite handy).

Any thoughts greatly appreciated,

Best,

I'd say you did quite well Nacho. Absolutely gorgeous color in these crisp shots. Fascinating creatures those 'jellies'. clap.gif

Looks like you got pretty good lighting for these displays based on the EXIF data. These simple but beautiful things are just mesmerizing, aren't they?

Thanks for the kind words, yes they are mesmerizing. I was stuck there just watching them pulsate, ondulate, or just float their way around! :)

Funny thing, just a couple of weeks ago I was swimming with some students in a bay that had jellies. We didn't know (and it was at night -- bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico) and some of my students got "stung" by some jellies.

Glad I was on the other side of the glass on this one!

    Thanks again,

    N

I've been to that aquarium many times, and I must say---to get shots that clear, that mesmerizing---requires some serious skill. It's hardly even possible to see around/over people's heads into the exhibits, let alone get such a clear shot. And handheld? Wow. I have to say they are beautiful seeing them from your point of view.

I am terrified of jellyfish, I hate them. It really is a paralyzing fear, I will never swim in the ocean or in a bay again in my lifetime when I know it's jellyfish season. In college I had the experience of being stung over almost every square inch of my body by the kind that float in the bay area in Annapolis. They covered the surface of the water, and I was tossed off my Laser sailboat into the water and saw them as I was going under the surface. They covered me, they were on my face, in my hair, everywhere. Anyway, usually just seeing a picture of them causes me genuine physical discomfort.

But I felt peaceful looking at your images!

Thank you all again for the kind comments. Just, what a story! That must have been rather scary indeed. I'm glad my shots did not make you cringe and turn away -- thanks for taking the time to look at them! How did you ever extricate yourself from that situation!

Thanks also for the vote of confidence! There were lots of folks there, so it took me some time to get to a display and get some space to take the shots. Still it was fun and I did it more as a "let me take these as vacation snap shots so we can show the folks back home." I'm really happy they made you feel peaceful -- I like my shots having that effect.

    Thanks again!

Here's another shot from the Aquarium... just not Jellies!

Just playing a bit with this one. I wanted to capture that mood of relaxed but coiled for action... That profile can make one's legs turn to jelly

    Thanks again,

Nice job on the jellies. I shot them at Monterey Bay Aquarium so I know it's not easy to do as well as this. Good job thumb.gif
