What is a portfolio?

I'm starting to put together a portfolio, but I'm not sure how to go about it. My first stab at it is: http://mercphoto.smugmug.com/gallery/147701

Its a collection of various types of photos. Should a portfolio be all encompsassing? Or targeted? I'm also going to have an iPhoto book made of these photos. I'm rather impressed with the quality of the images of the latest offerings by Apple. Should I make one image per page? Or is multiple images per page acceptable?

Thanks.

    Bill,

I recently bought a book titled "Portfolios That Sell" by Selina Oppenheim. Exactly what your looking for.
