I was wondering if there is a way to create a new layer that is a merge of all layers below it without loosing the layers below. Not sure if that made sense or not?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Often one has to make a new blank layer: cmd+shift+opt+n (new layer without dialog box).

Then it may have to be moved to the top/front of the layer stack: cmd+shift+] if the top/front layer was not active when the new layer was initially created.

Then the previously mentioned keyboard shortcut is used to "merge visible with duplicate"...which can also be done the "manual" way, by holding down opt/alt while using the merge visible layers menu command (which is where the keyboard shortcut comes from).

Others have given the combination, but - additionally - if you want to make a flattened layer of a layer plus an Adjustment Layer without losing the Adjustment Layer function, make only the two layers visible and hold down ALT (PC) while clicking "Merge Visible".
