Every other week during the summer we drive the Richardson Highway from Fairbanks to Valdez. Every trip is unique with different weather, length of daylight, number of animals, etc. This is an image I captured Thursday on the way headed south. Taken at 3:54 in the morning about 15 minutes before the sun broke the horizon. It wasn't the best spot in the world to take the photo from but I had to just stop along the highway when the light was right :dunno

    Thanks for the comments.

Awais, the mist in the valley is most likely due to the fact that the Copper River was between me and the mountain. The Copper is a fairly large river derived of glacial melt water. The cold water temperature churned up in rapids keeps the temperature in the valley several degrees cooler than the surrounding area. Plus it was a cool morning (about 28 F when I took the photo) which stratifies the air when there's no wind. These things combine to cause moist air to lie close to the valley floor (in case anyone other than me cares about thermodynamics ne_nau.gif ) I purposely underexposed a bit which I've found intensifies the color of the alpenglow.

Thanks, Dan. This was one of those scenes where you look through the camera and think to yourself "just don't screw it up" rolleyes1.gif Of course the behind the scenes aspect is that I was in my shirtsleeves and it was 27 degrees F and about 20 mph of wind blowing as I fumbled around with a GND filter etc. Somehow I'm never prepared during those special moments....headscratch.gif

Assuming you use rectangular gnds, do you hold them or put them in a colkin adaptor Dan?

Thanks for commenting. Having the opportunity to see this sort of lighting is pretty cool. Glad I was able to make a reasonable capture of it to share...
