Uh-oh! New lens, but slow focus. Can you help?

So, based on the excellent advice given in these forums, I recently purchased a Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS for my 40D. The shots are super sharp, and I am enjoying the lens, but when using AF in any lighting situation it seems to hunt a lot more than any other lens I've used and most often slides all the way to the end of its range and gets stuck there. Since none of the reviews mention slow AF issues, I am wondering if I need to return the lens, get my camera serviced, change settings on the camera, or do something differently. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I consider $1k for a lens a major investment.
Thanks everybody!
