Hello There! I just purchased a Canon 50D and I'm looking for a more professional flash component. Currently shooting on the Digital Rebel with a 580ex ii. We typically shoot mostly weddings and portraits. Any recommendations?

That is your top of the line pro flash for canon.......the only step up now is to go Studio Strobes (& a handheld incident anbient-flash meter) with battery packs for location shooting....which means you will be shooting in manual mode all of the time, which you can do now......maybe you meant you need more than one 580EXii to shoot with as slaves for more lighting at weddings.............

    Which are you looking for???

I moved this to the Accessories forum where we discuss external and studio flashes.

The Canon 580EX II is capable of professional results in a wedding environment but I do use studio monolights for the formals. The power to overcome ambient light and to be able to use large modifiers is a major imperative for me.

My choice in lights are the FlashPoint II, 1820A monolights, usually firing into a pair of large umbrellas in a modified "wall of light" configuration. I get some dimensionality as well as suitability for both individual and group configurations, reconfiguring quickly and relatively easily. I use 3-way umbrellas so I can "shoot through" or reflect as needed.

I fire them using simple radio triggers/slaves, similar to the "Cactus" 16 channel units.

For candids I use Sigma flashes, mounted on a flash bracket, modified with either:

    DIY "Scoop" modifier.
    DIY fill card modifier.
    Demb Flip-It.
