Getting more/different expressions from models

I've started to shoot models, mostly fairly new models with some experience. I notice that they all have their habits in posing, expressions, and other mannerisms. Some have more range than others.

I'd like to get more expressions from them during the shoot. I'll often ask them to give me "sexy, funny, coy, shy, etc." and other emotions. I'll also ask them who their favourite actor and tell them to pretend the camera is the actor. The results vary from funny to okay.

A UK portrait photographer (I can't remember his name) mentioned that "portrait is expression" and that the photographer's job is to use your mouth and talk to the model. He also mentioned to not "ask them to smile but to say something to make them smile."

Any advice from photographers that shoot models? What is your strategy to get more range from each model?
