OK, my 11 year old kid took these pictures (I couldn't leave work). But the could formation itself was unbelievable. Thought I would share...

A Roll Cloud over Nantucket, MA, 10:40-10:50 am, July 1, 2009 (it moved very quickly).

    Researched it and did a blog post here: http://www.ackdoc.com/wordpress/2009/07/01/our-morning-glory/. It was awe-inspiring.

    That was awesome!
    I've never seen anything like that before. It would have been my luck to not have a camera either! Good thing that your son was happy to fill in for you!

    Those clouds are crazy! I think I'd have to "go home sick" if I saw something like this out the window.

    That's awesome! Looks almost apocalyptic... maybe that's just because the combination of the graveyard and the cloud. Hah.

    At any rate, it's a really nice capture. thumb.gif

    Greg;

    Tell you son great work! I grew up out on the Great Plains and have seen several of these. Usually you see them in front of a rain squall. To have blue sky above and behind the line is a pretty special capture!

    Nice job of capturing the roll cloud. I've been up north for a while and haven't seen one in years. Thanks for sharing...

    Amazing.thumb.gifthumb I spent many years on Cape Cod sailing Buzzard's Bay and Nantucket Sound but never encountered such a phenomenon. If I ever saw this while many miles offshore I think I'd have to change my shorts :D
    Did it bring a squall behind it?

    Very strange weather that day. Mostly blue sky before, above, and following the roll cloud. Cloud came at 10:45 am. Temp immediately fell from 75 deg to 60 deg. then went back up. Kids went to the beach early that afternoon and enjoyed the sun. And then at 4 pm, we had a violent thunderstorm. Neighbor lost two cable boxes, two computers, and two TVs to a lightning strike. Very bizarre.
