Do you have a business license?

I've been asked this many times with my ceremony music (I'm a flute player/teacher by day).

At what point do you get a business license for photography? Is it State Specific? or do you just claim a 1099 at the end of the year?

Before I go too deep into this, I'd like someone to give me the nitty gritty :D

Shannon - before we start another thread on this, please use our search feature. Enter "business license" and see the many threads that already exist on this subject - notably one started by catspaw. thumb.gif

Each area has it's own specific requirements. Contact your accountant or the local chamber of commerce and they will tell you what you need for your area. The 1099 is what you get when someone else pays you. If you accept more than $400 a year - even if you don't have a profit, you are required to file a Federal Tax Return. Again, talk to your accountant when you start any business. Better to start out on the right foot than get caught in some big problems later.

I agree, the fact that they combine topics so that there are over a hundred pages to look through can be aggravating and when you do a search many times you don't find exactly what you're looking for.

but not easier on the VOLUNTEER moderators who have to manage the hundreds and hundreds of threads all dealing with the same subject.

the fact: I combined three of your threads that ALL had to do with exactly the same topic - you shopping logos.

doing a search is all anyone asks. if you don't find what you're looking for, there's no law against starting a new thread.

In my county, I don't have to have a business license as long as I have no more than a certain number of cars coming to me in a day. I also think I could have one employee on site without needing a license. I still have to have a sales and use tax permit, and of course I file income taxes with all the appropriate forms.

Look at your local laws concerning the license and sales tax issues.

Thank you Caroline. I did a search and came up with a little info here, hoping a NJ photographer will chime in .

I wasn't referring to that, I was however referring to things like trying to find the right customization thread or something pertaining to macs and customization. I must've searched through 50 pages before just giving up.
